Residents Urged To Get Involved For Volunteers Week 2019

Published on Friday 31 May 2019

Look out for drop-in sessions, information events and more as Derbyshire County Council encourages people to get involved with their communities during Volunteer Week 2019.

Now in its 35th year, the annual campaign aims to recognise, celebrate and thank volunteers as well as encourage people across the country to help out in their local areas.

From Saturday 1 June to Friday 7 June, community-minded residents will have the chance to learn about the variety of volunteering opportunities available in Derbyshire at events being held around the county, including:

Monday June 3 and Wednesday June 5 - Volunteer Passport stall based at County Hall, Matlock – pop by for a chat and more information about the Volunteer Passport scheme which gives people free training to help with different aspects of volunteering including safeguarding, health and safety and first aid.

Tuesday June 4 – find out more about volunteering opportunities in Derbyshire – 10am-2pm – building resilience Hub, 96 Market Street, Shirebrook

Wednesday June 5 – volunteering opportunities in Amber Valley – Amber Valley CVS, 33 Market Place, Ripley – 5.30pm-7pm. For more info contact Kirsty Barker 01773 512076.

Thursday June 6– Volunteers Open Day – 10am-3pm – Erewash Voluntary Action, Granville Avenue, Long Eaton. For more info contact Linda Brown on 0115 9466740.

The county council supports a number of different schemes and projects around Derbyshire that provide people with opportunities to volunteer.

They range from helping out the authority’s emergency planning department when crises hit as part of the Derbyshire Emergency Volunteers team, to helping someone with their weekly shopping with the popular Time Swap initiative.
In addition, the council’s Volunteer Passport scheme gives people free key training to help with lots of different aspects of volunteering including training in equality and diversity, safeguarding, health and safety and first aid.

Training sessions are held throughout the year across Derbyshire and people don’t need any previous formal qualifications to take part.

Since its launch in 2009, around 3,000 people in the county have gained their volunteer passport – with ages of participants ranging from seven to 87 years old.

The scheme works closely with other council initiatives like the Disability Employment Service to help people of all abilities find volunteering opportunities.

Derbyshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Health and Communities Councillor Carol Hart said: “Volunteers in Derbyshire are hugely important to the community and help us support a wide range of activities and services.

“While opportunities to help out are available all year-round, Volunteers Week provides the perfect chance to let residents know about the various different ways they can give their time to help others.

“There are lots of ways to get involved – whether that’s getting out and about with our Countryside Service, helping out at museums or being part of our befriending service supporting isolated adults – there’s something for everyone.”

Residents can also use the county council’s in-depth Derbyshire Directory – which lists more than 3,000 voluntary and charitable organisations in the county www.Derbyshire.gov.uk/Directory
