Pcc Congratulates Community Partners On Funding Success

Published on Tuesday 16 April 2019

Youth workers and community safety volunteers became the toast of Derbyshire during a special celebration event marking the release of more than £226,000 of crime prevention funding.

Derbyshire Police and Crime Commissioner Hardyal Dhindsa invited the recipients of his latest Community Action Grant funding to Police HQ in Ripley in gratitude for their dedication and passion in protecting vulnerable people and helping offenders turn their backs on crime.

The Commissioner highly values the input of community organisations to keep Derbyshire safe and supports a vast range of projects to help him achieve the ambitions set out in his Police and Crime Plan.

“These charities and projects are supporting people through a host of complex problems including addiction, domestic abuse, lack of opportunity and social exclusion to break the cycle of offending in the long term,” he said.

The PCC has recently released almost £227,000 in grants for 2019-20 which is being shared among 19 organisations.

Representatives from the successful projects were invited to a special celebration event today to be congratulated for their work and vision by the PCC and members of his team.

“I am immensely proud of the difference our community organisations are making to cut crime,” said Mr Dhindsa.

“We have a proven track record of helping people to tackle a wide range of problems so they are more resilient in a crisis. This is the most effective and responsible way of keeping our communities safe and I’ve seen the results first-hand.

“A wealth of new and innovative projects have received funding this year and it was a pleasure to meet the volunteers and managers behind them. It’s important to me they understand the value they bring to public safety and feel part of a united team helping to deliver permanent change to our residents and communities.

“I’m looking forward to reporting their progress in the near future.”

Among the organisations attending were Care and Education which received £25,000 towards a holistic mentorship service for eight-year-olds at risk of committing crime and antisocial behaviour and Greenwich Park Sports Partnership which has been awarded £15,000 for the provision of weekly indoor and outdoor sessions for young people aged between nine and 17 over a 38-week period.

Other beneficiary projects invited to the celebration were Rural Action Derbyshire which received £25,000 towards a new project helping older people and those in isolated communities to become confident and stay safe online and The Elm Foundation which has secured £20,509 to provide specialist advice and services to victims of domestic abuse within frontline health settings including A&E departments, GP surgeries and minor injuries departments.

Alongside larger grants, the Commissioner also supports smaller funding proposals to help communities discourage offending. Artcore received £2,500 towards roller shutters to protect the building and prevent street drinkers from congregating in the entrance and car park space while The Friends of Aston Brickyard Planation received a grant of £600 to cover the installation of three security cameras to safeguard conservation tools and equipment.
