Derbyshire Schools Score Top Marks For Travel

Published on Friday 30 November 2018

Pupils at three Derbyshire schools have scored top marks in a prestigious regional travel awards scheme.

Alfreton Nursery School, in Grange Street, Alfreton, Holbrook School for Autism, Port Way, Holbrook and Riddings Infant School, in West Street, Riddings, all scooped accolades in the East and West Midlands and North West Regional Modeshift Sustainable Travel Accreditation and Recognition for Schools (STARS) scheme.

Alfreton becomes the only nursery school in the county to hold a STARS award for its work teaching three-year-olds to pedal a bike so they can ride to school as an alternative to travelling by car. Staff and parents are encouraged to do the same.

The award also recognises the school’s bicycle-themed flower display at this year’s Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Chatsworth Flower Show. And it won the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) award of the region for its commitment to cycling, securing the school a place in next year’s national awards.

Holbrook school won the title of best Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) award for its work around teaching children with autism how to make independent journeys, cross the road safely and plan and make journeys by public transport. It too will now go forward to the national awards next year.

And for the third year running Riddings was recognised as the best primary school in Derbyshire for reducing car trips through communal walking and scooting events to school. This includes its weekly Walkie and Wheelie Wednesday initiative.

Councillor Simon Spencer Derbyshire County Council Cabinet Member for Highways, Transport and Infrastructure, said: “I’d like to pass on my congratulations to all these young people. It’s very heartening to see them getting involved in healthier and more environmentally-friendly ways of travelling. Hopefully this will set them up with responsible journey habits for life.”
