PCC welcomes success against top policing priorities
Derbyshire Police and Crime Commissioner Hardyal Dhindsa has welcomed the progress made to achieve his key priorities and make the county safer.
A series of reports presented to the Commissioner's Strategic Priorities Board (SPA) this week show the force is fulfilling ambitions to achieve greater diversity in the workforce and utilise advanced technology in the fight against crime.
The Commissioner welcomed the news that 6% of recruits in Derbyshire's recent (2017/18) recruitment campaign are from BAME (Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic) backgrounds.
The force has undertaken significant work to address under-representation, becoming the first in the country to work with Job Centre Plus (JCP) on joint Work Based Academies (WBA) aimed at getting JCP service users back into the workplace.
These workshops run over a two-week period and provide Job Centre Plus service users with the opportunity of finding out about vacant policing roles, meeting serving staff and accessing viable training through job centre plus.
Two of those BAME participants who took part in June 2018 have embarked on their PCSO careers thanks to this intervention.
Commenting on the progress, Mr Dhindsa said: "Addressing the diversity gap remains a top priority and I'm pleased we are beginning to see some progress in this area as a result of the increased support we are providing candidates during the application process.
"However, what makes this work especially challenging is the limited opportunity for recruitment within the force as a result of our ongoing funding limitations.
"Having a representative workforce is a key strategic aim and progress is being made but it is clearly more work is needed to ensure the force fully reflects the communities in which it serves and I am committed to delivering this with the full support of the Chief Constable and his Chief Officer Team."
In a further report it was revealed Derbyshire Constabulary has recently been identified by the Home Office as an "exemplar" force in the field of developing, implementing and promoting digital mobile working.
Since October 2016, the force has deployed more than 2,000 Samsung handheld smart phones, more than 1,600 devices to police officers, more than 100 to PSCOs, 50 to Specials and 250+ to police staff.
The force continues to innovate and experiment with new technological solutions, trialling and testing new devices, tablets and ways of increasing the power of mobile phones to enhance agility in various roles including police custody.
As part of the Home Office Biometrics (HOB) programme, Derbyshire has worked alongside other forces to develop software to support the mobile fingerprint solution. The initial rollout of the physical devices has begun and 250 will now be issued to police vehicles.
"Technology continues to play a critical role in crime detection and helps us to develop a more agile workforce which ensures our officers are accessible when needed," explained Mr Dhindsa.
"We must now look to further optimise our current systems to ensure the force remains at the very forefront of police technology in the future."
