Erewash Meadows Nature Reserve takes the Credit

Published on Wednesday 28 November 2018

Earlier in the year Derbyshire Wildlife Trust celebrated the launch of a new project to restore the wetlands habitats at Erewash Meadows Nature Reserve, which was made possible by a grant of £12,726 from Viridor Credits Environmental Company, through the Landfill Communities Fund. The project was conducted during August and September so that ground-nesting birds were not disturbed.

Erewash Meadows Nature Reserve is located on the Derbyshire-Nottinghamshire border, near Jacksdale. A significant, and treasured wetland reserve it provides essential refuge to a variety of native and nationally important species, including breeding skylarks, water voles and lapwings, as well as white-clawed crayfish that reside in the Cromford Canal. Its habitat enables these species, and more to survive and thrive.

Cattle graze the land for much of the year, which can greatly benefit the wetland habitat creating a variety of lengths of grass for nesting birds and controlling non-native pest species. The restoration project has seen the erection of new fencing to control the movement of the cattle, ensuring the wetland areas and meadow are grazed appropriately. The project has also witnessed the resurfacing of boggy paths to allow better year-round access, and the re-establishment of marshland and scrapes for feeding waders.

Derbyshire Wildlife Trust is immensely proud of Erewash Meadows Nature Reserve, and the restoration of the network of shallow ditches and scrapes will provide shelter, food and breeding ground to all manner of species for many years to come. Visitors are now able to enjoy the beautiful landscape and diverse wildlife that lives here all year round footpaths and accessibility have been thoroughly restored.

Gareth Williams, Operations Manager at Viridor Credits said: “This project is a great example of how  an award can make a massive difference to the community. Viridor Credits is proud to support Derbyshire Wildlife Trust in maintaining access to this much-loved reserve.”

It is thanks to Viridor Credits Environmental Company for their generous grant, and the achievements of those who have come forward to help the work to get under way. The area has so much significance in terms of habitat and wildlife, with the hope that visitors and wildlife alike will continue to flock to the reserve and enjoy all that it has to offer.
