A very busy Day at Heage Windmill
The 2nd of October started with three consecutive visits of groups from Kilburn Primary School to the windmilll, with no pauses between. As one group left the next was handed over, after an introduction by miller Anthony Sharpe, to Lynn Allen, who guided three separate groups of children, in turn, around the mill.
The sails were turning and the children were very impressed and learnt how the windmill worked and something of its history. This marathon effort by Lynn was due to the current shortage of volunteer guides and anyone interested in helping should check on our web site www.heagewindmill.org.uk . Lynn should have been given a 'Lady Of The Event' award if we had one!
But this was then followed by an exciting session for Neil Oates, from nearby Ripley, who had been gifted ‘A Miller for the Day experience’ . Guided by a team of three qualified millers who were stocking up on flour for mill, Neil , a retired headmaster, learnt how to start and stop the mill, to control the speed of the sails and then assisted in the stone milling of some 125 kg of flour , using wind power to drive the stones – a really environmentally friendly process. Neil really enjoyed the experience and went home with a bag of flour he had helped produce and a certificate recording the occasion. He says it was a day he will never forget!
(Details on how to become a ‘Miller for the Day’ are also included on our web site.)
