Derbyshire farm shop Croots recognised in national magazine awards

Published on Wednesday 5 September 2018

Award-winning Croots Farm Shop has been shortlisted in The Great British Food Awards 2018 for four of its products.

Previously the popular Derbyshire farm shop was highly commended in the 2016 Great British Food Awards for its homemade Derbyshire Pasty and in the 2015 awards the Croots homemade Bakewell Tart was crowned the overall winner in the sweet bakes category – flying the flag for one of Derbyshire’s famous food products.

Run by national magazine Great British Food, the awards this year had an unprecedented number of entries.

The Croots products that have been named as finalists are the Croots Mince Pie, shortlisted in the sweet bake category where category judge is chef Raymond Blanc; Croots Mince and Onion Pie in the savoury bake award, where category judge is chef Dan Doherty; with two products, Croots Punjabi Burger and the Croots Ecclesbourne Sausage, chosen for the Butcher’s counter shortlist, which has chef Nathan Outlaw as the category judge.

Steve Croot, who runs the farm shop at Wirksworth Road, near Duffield, with wife Kay, said: “We are thrilled to hear that four of the Croots homemade products have been shortlisted in this national awards scheme, run by a well-respected food magazine. The judging panel is made up of Michelin-starred restaurateurs, celebrity chefs, broadcasters and others.

“We are especially pleased to hear that the Croots Ecclesbourne Sausage has been shortlisted, as it was created in conjunction with students at Ecclesbourne School.

“This latest award news comes on the back of Croots Farm Shop winning two Great Taste Awards in August – for our Croots Sausage Roll and Croots Old Goat Ale, which were both awarded two-star accolades in the awards, widely regarded as the ‘Oscars’ of the food world and the ‘epicurean equivalent of the Booker prize’.

“We have a great team at Croots who make many of our products on the premises, and it’s down to them, our suppliers, and our customers who give us valuable feedback, that we win so many awards and accolades.”

The Great British Food Awards were launched in 2014 to celebrate the country’s finest home-grown ingredients, as well as the hard-working folk who produce and cook with them. Winners of The Great British Food Awards will be announced on 11th October in the November edition of Great British Food magazine.

Croots Farm Shop, which is this year celebrating its tenth anniversary, is open Monday to Saturday from 9am to 5pm (Shires Eatery until 4.30pm) and from 10am to 4pm on Sundays. Croots runs Fresh Fish Thursdays between 9am and 1pm on Thursdays.
