Bowls clubs boost from Heanor redevelopment plan
The future of two Heanor bowls clubs looks secure thanks to plans for affordable homes.
If planning permission for the redevelopment of the town’s abandoned tennis courts into five homes is approved, Futures Housing Group will create new sporting facilities as part of a deal with Amber Valley Borough Council.
Marcus Keys, Futures’ Group Director of Investment and Transformation, said: “This partnership will bring much-needed affordable homes to Heanor while supporting the local community and reviving an unused piece of land.”
The proposal for the Mayfield Avenue ground includes two three-bedroom shared ownership homes and three two-bedroom rent to buy homes. The brand-new bowling pavilion would boast changing area, kitchen and toilets and an indoor bowling area.
It is hoped that both of Heanor’s bowls clubs will make use of the pavilion and that the new facilities will encourage new members to take up the sport.
Commenting on the developments, Amber Valley Borough Council’s Portfolio Holder for Environment, Cllr Chris Short said: “We are very pleased how these plans are developing and are confident of a positive outcome for the two bowls clubs and their members.
“The tennis courts have not been used since the 1970’s and so it makes perfect sense to use that land to help improve the bowls facilities at Mayfield Avenue and deliver much needed affordable housing in Heanor.”
The full application, AVA/2018/0831 is available to view on the Council’s website via the planning portal.
