Line Up Confirmed For First Ever Joint Fire And Police Open Day

Published on Thursday 2 August 2018

Planning for Derbyshire’s first ever Joint Fire and Police Open Day is in the final stages and all exhibiting partners and demonstrations have been booked and finalised for Saturday’s event (4 August 2018).

Doors open at 10.30am at the Joint Fire and Police Training Centre in Ripley and will stay open until 4pm, giving visitors plenty of chance to look around the vast range of demonstrations and partner stands. Parking is free and refreshments will be available.

Demonstrations Include:

Road Traffic Collision (RTC): This demonstration will show the joint emergency blue light response to an RTC.  Firefighters, police officers from the Road Policing Unit and East Midlands Ambulance Paramedics will work together in a realistic scenario featuring casualties (actors).

Public Order Scenario: Police officers will show their response to a public order related incident.

Car & House Fire: Firefighters will respond in two fire engines to a car fire that has spread to an adjacent property.

Working at Height: The JTC is home to two training towers that scale approximately 20 meters high.  Firefighters will work at height showing visitors how we train to respond to incidents other than fires.

Fire Investigation Dog: Dexter the fire service dog will be conducting a demonstration where younger visitors to the show can get involved.

Police Search Dog: Trained to detect drugs, cash and guns, Sandie will be strutting her stuff, and competing with Dexter for the adoration of visitors to the open day.

Kitchen Fire Demonstration Unit: Throughout the day fire community safety officers will demonstrate the effect of putting water onto a chip pan fire.

Smoke Tent Experience: An inflatable house is plunged into darkness and filled with disco smoke simulating a house fire, allowing visitors the chance to find their way out!

Road Policing Unit – Deploy a stinger.  Visitors can have a go at deploying a stinger, a devise used by police officers on roads to stop vehicles by puncturing their tyres.

VR4 Car: On loan from Leicestershire Fire & Rescue Service, this virtual reality experience is built into a Ford Focus and up to four visitors at a time can experience this road traffic collision scenario, delivering a serious road safety message.

VR4 Road Safety Goggle: In addition to the virtual reality car, virtual reality goggles will also be on hand to showcase road safety messages.

Virtual Reality Incident Command: Demonstrations showing how virtual reality software is used to train incident commands.

Police Rural Crime Unit: Birds of Prey will accompany the rural crime unit giving visitors the chance to see these beautiful creatures up close.

Large Animal Rescue & Water Rescue Teams: Firefighters will showcase specialist rescue teams that respond to large animal rescues and water rescues.  A life-sized horse mannequin and water rescue boat will feature on this stand.

Aerial Ladder Platform: Visitors will be able to put their names down and be selected at random to take a trip up in the aerial ladder platform, enjoying views across Derbyshire and of the Open Day.

Speaking ahead of the event, Group Manager Gary Platts said: “A lot of planning has gone into delivering a fantastic day out for all our communities.  The main aim of the open day is to showcase the varied work, not only carried out by Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service and Derbyshire Constabulary, but also the work of many of our partners too.  We’ve also arranged plenty of activities, entertainment and refreshments to ensure our visitors have a great time.

“There has been a lot of planning and we’ve ordered the weather too, so we hope people come along and enjoy everything that we have planned for the day and that they go away with a greater understanding of all the work that goes into making Derbyshire safer.”

Detective Chief Inspector, Sarah McAughtrie said: “This is a really good opportunity for the public of Derbyshire to come to the training centre that we share with the Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service, to get an insight into some of the work we do and meet some of the people that do it.  There are many skills within both organisations that people may not know about and this is the ideal event to come and see them.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the many volunteers that will be attending on the day to make sure everyone has a fantastic day.  You never know it may inspire some of the younger generations to choose the emergency services as a career in the future!”
