The Sculpture Trail is a dream come to life!

Published on Thursday 26 July 2018

The fantastical fairy tale art trail is open and has become a great attraction at Carsington Water.

Local chainsaw artist Andrew Frost has created some spectacular pieces, which can now been seen at the new Sculpture and Educational Trail for Derbyshire Wildlife Trust and Severn Trent Water at Carsington Water Visitor Centre. The experience consists of a main trail of eight stops, and a children’s fairy tale trail with eight sculpture stations. Each stop or station is designed to appeal to a different learning style, and encourage Carsington’s million or so annual visitors as possible to engage interactively and personally with nature and learn more about the local landscape. Encouraging people to move further away from the visitors centre and see more of the wildlife that is in and around Carsington Water.

Project manager Diane Gould said “We wanted to create something interactive, inclusive and accessible, to excite everyone and encourage people to explore further afield. We believe whole heartedly we have done this.”

Kaite Crowther, Senior Marketing Officer at Derbyshire Wildlife Trust went to meet Andy while he was working on part of the trail. She said “He carved a gorgeous fairy house with a chainsaw whilst I was there – it was so exciting. His sculptures are truly stunning whatever age you are!

The Sculpture and Educational trail has been funded by a grant worth more than £20,000  from the Tarmac Landfill Communities Fund through the Derbyshire Environmental Trust; a fund which helps to build communities and transform lives through awarding grants to community and environmental projects across Derbyshire.

Joshua Mason, Quarry Manager at Tarmac's Ballidon site said: "We are pleased to have been able to support this project through the Tarmac Landfill Communities Fund.  We hope that local people enjoy visiting the trail."

The trail is now becoming a very popular part of the visitor experience at Carsington Water.
