Roadshows, Information Events And More For Carers Week 2018

Published on Thursday 7 June 2018

Carers in Derbyshire can find support, information and advice at a number of events and roadshows being held around the county for Carers Week 2018.

The national campaign kicks off on Monday 11 June and aims to celebrate carers as well as promoting services that support health and wellbeing and reduce loneliness.

Derbyshire County Council is backing several events being organised during Carers Week in partnership with Derbyshire Carers Association (DCA), as well as launching an innovative project that aims to highlight the experiences and quality of life of unpaid carers.

“Walk a Mile in My Shoes” is the culmination of 12 months of work – compiling stories and first-hand experiences of local unpaid carers – showcasing the good, bad, funny, difficult, most rewarding and most frustrating aspects of caring.

Volunteer carers took part in recording short audio pieces about their caring roles, which have been collected, edited and placed alongside pictures of a pair of shoes they feel represents their lives.

When members of the public visit the Walk a Mile ‘virtual shoe shop’ on the Carers in Derbyshire website from June 11 - www.carersinderbyshire.org.uk/wam - they’ll be invited to choose a pair of carer shoes to ‘walk a mile’ in while listening to the recording of their caring story.

To mark the launch of the project, the county council will be hosting a number of information events at venues around the county, which will run alongside other awareness-raising events during Carers Week.

Derbyshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Adult Care Councillor Jean Wharmby said:

“Carers Week is all about celebrating the valued work that carers do around the county, while also reminding them that help, advice and support is available should they need it.

“Often, carers can become so focused on the person they care for that they forget to look after themselves.

“In Derbyshire alone, there are more than 120,000 people who provide unpaid care for loved ones – so it’s vitally important that they look after themselves and know where to go if the need support.”

“DCA is delighted to work with the County Council to raise awareness, identify new and existing carers to assist maintaining their health and wellbeing.”
