Birds to rule the roost at Duffield Castle
The National Trust and DerwentWISE are inviting people to join them to help our feathered friends at Duffield Castle on Saturday10 February from 10am-3pm. The day will start at St Alkmunds Church Hall where you can help knock some nest boxes into shape. At 1pm we’ll meet over at the Castle site to put the boxes up and tidy up some of the vegetation on the bankside.
A report commissioned by the DerwentWISE scheme highlighted ways to improve the remaining castle grounds for wildlife, as well as conserving the ruins and helping visitors understand the significance of the former castle.
‘We’re making a start by getting the bird boxes in place ready for the nesting season. We’re slightly ahead of the game- this year National Nest Box Week starts on the 14th February’ says Jon Lewney, National Trust Ranger.
There are a few other activities to do on the site itself. ‘Castle hill provided such a great vantage point, and to help visitors get a feel for that we are trying to keep a view across the valley open.’ Says Rachel Costigan from the DerwentWISE team. ‘Our volunteer team did a great job of opening out the view a couple of years ago, but we need to keep the regrowth in check.’
Dress for the weather with sturdy footwear and bring a packed lunch if you are staying for the day. In case of high winds the afternoon session will be postponed.
The DerwentWISE project is a Heritage Lottery Funded landscape partnership project. Managed by Derbyshire Wildlife Trust it restores habitats and industrial heritage within the Lower Derwent Valley. For more information about the DerwentWISE project please visit www.derwentwise.com
