People With Learning Disabilities To Help Shape Future Support

Published on Wednesday 10 January 2018

People with learning disabilities and their families across Derbyshire are being given the chance to help shape their future support.

Derbyshire County Council is holding a series of workshops designed to encourage people with learning disabilities to express their ambitions for a fulfilling life.

The council wants to make sure that support focuses on an individual’s strengths to help them achieve personal goals instead of trying to fit people in to services that are available.

So it is inviting people with learning disabilities, everyone involved in their lives and interested agencies and groups to have their say.

The ‘My Life My Way’ engagement events, which will take place from 10am to 3pm, will be held on:

• Friday 26 January at Waterside Centre, Ashbourne
• Tuesday 30 January at Bainbridge Hall, Bolsover
• Tuesday 6 February at Sharpes Pottery Museum, Swadlincote
• Wednesday 7 February at Killamarsh Community Campus, Stanley Street, Killamarsh
• Friday 9 February at Kirk Hallam Social Club, Dallimore Road, Kirk Hallam
• Monday 12 February at the Proact Stadium, Sheffield Road, Chesterfield
• Tuesday 13 February at Bradbury Community House, Market Street, Glossop
• Wednesday 21 February at Lumb Farm, Derby Road, Marehay
• Friday 23 February at Buxton Methodist Church, Chapel Street

Councillor Jean Wharmby, Derbyshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Adult Care, said: “Everyone deserves a fulfilling life which focuses on their goals and ambitions – whatever their abilities.

“We want to work with people with learning disabilities to make sure our support in the future encourages them to fulfil personal goals, be part of their local community and to be treated as equals.
“This may mean being more flexible to give people with learning disabilities greater choice focusing on life skills, social activities, volunteering and, in some cases, paid employment.”

All views will be considered and a plan will be drawn up for the future development of day services and day opportunities, which will be discussed by the council’s Cabinet.

Councillor Wharmby added: “It’s important we work together to make the best use of our resources and come up with a plan for the future that is shaped by the people it affects most.

“However I’d like to reassure people that no changes would be made to the services we provide without consulting people first.”

Meetings will also be held for people with profound and multiple learning disabilities and for people with behavioural support needs who may require a different approach and methods of communication.

People are asked to book on to their chosen meeting to ensure there is enough space and everybody’s needs can be catered for.
