Emotional Return to the Red Lion Pub At Crich Tramway
A couple who met in the Red Lion Pub in Stoke on Trent, are making an emotional return to the same pub, which has since been transported brick by brick to Derbyshire.
Norman and Sue Marsden met 51 years ago, when Norman ran a Scooter Club at the pub, which originally stood near the church of St. Peter ad Vincula, otherwise known as Stoke Minster in Stoke on Trent.
In the early 1970s, the Red Lion, which had originally been a hotel, became the subject of a compulsory purchase order and was doomed to be demolished, but instead of being destroyed, the pub was carefully dismantled and its brick and tiled exterior was transported to Crich Tramway Village, Derbyshire, some 48 miles away.
The actual rebuilding was a long process, mostly undertaken by volunteers. It continued throughout the 1990s and the Red Lion was formally opened at Crich Tramway Village in 2002.
Norman recounts: “Sue had just broken up with a boyfriend and was at the Scooter Club I ran at the Red Lion. I asked her out and we married the following year”.
Norman and Sue have invited members of their family to Crich on 12th August this year, to celebrate their 50th Wedding Anniversary, which actually falls on 10th August.
Norman said: “We will be reflecting on how we met in the Red Lion and the family will enjoy some walking activities in the Peak District during our visit to Derbyshire.”
Crich Tramway Village is open daily from 10.00am to 5.30pm (last admissions at 4.00pm). For further details telephone: 01773 854321 or visit: www.tramway.co.uk
