The Midland Railway – Butterley is one of Derbyshire’s leading heritage attractions, offering visitors the chance to experience the golden age of rail travel.
Located near Ripley, visitors can enjoy a heritage train ride from Butterley Station to Swanwick Junction, where a large heritage site awaits with historic locomotives, vintage vehicles, industrial exhibits and unique buildings including the beautifully restored Victorian Railwayman’s Church.
There is plenty to explore across the site, making it a great day out for families, railway enthusiasts and those interested in local history. The railway also hosts a busy programme of themed events and seasonal activities throughout the year.
The Midland Railway – Butterley is a registered charity run largely by volunteers, dedicated to preserving Britain’s railway and industrial heritage for future generations.
The railway is usually open most weekends, with additional Wednesday's during school holidays. As opening days and train timetables vary, please check the Midland Railway – Butterley website for the latest information and full events calendar before planning your visit.
