Nine new on-call firefighters for Derbyshire
On Sunday 18 February, Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service formally welcomed nine new on-call firefighters at a pass-out ceremony attended by their closest family and friends.
Derbyshire’s Deputy Chief Fire Officer (DCFO) hosted the ceremony to recognise and celebrate firefighters from on-call course 3-23 with a presentation of certificates, special awards, and operational displays for the assembled guests.
Speaking after the ceremony, DCFO Taylor said: “A pass-out ceremony is a special occasion for everyone as we celebrate our newest on-call firefighters and formally mark the beginning of the next phase of their fire service career.
“Becoming an on-call firefighter is a big commitment, being available to respond to a pager at a moment’s notice and attend all manner of emergency incidents, in some cases while still undertaking primary employment. All of this would not be possible without the support of family, therefore it’s an honour to welcome not only our newest firefighters, but also their families here today.
“Similarly, I must also acknowledge our dedicated operational training team who provided guidance and support to the trainees over several weeks to ensure they are ready to face the challenges they will encounter as on-call firefighters.
“I am confident this will stand them in good stead as they progress in what I know to be a challenging yet rewarding career, and I wish them every success as they work to support us in our vision of Making Derbyshire Safer Together.”
The nine on-call firefighters who passed out on Sunday began on fire stations across Derbyshire in October 2023, serving Belper, Long Eaton, Swadlincote, Staveley, Alfreton, Shirebrook, Heanor, Whaley Bridge and Clowne.
Special Awards
At the end of each firefighter trainee course, three special awards are presented.
The Teamwork Award is presented to the trainee who has given help and support to other members of the team probably at times away from the gaze of the instructors.
The Technical Award is presented to the trainee who has achieved the highest combined mark in all their technical exams.
The Silver Axe is presented to the trainee who has consistently achieved a high standard in both the technical and practical aspects of the course from day one.
The special awards for on-call course 3-23 were presented to:
- Silver Axe – Firefighter John Sentance
- Teamwork Award – Firefighter Alex Green
- Technical Award – Firefighter Joseph Aram
