Our name comes from the Chevin hill which overlooks the Derwent Valley to the West of Belper. The Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage site runs through this area - the only World Heritage Site in the East Midlands.
The name Chevin derives from the Celtic word Cefn, meaning 'ridge', and this forms part of an ancient route used by Celts, Romans and Anglo Saxons. There are lovely walks along the footpaths over the Chevin; some photos of the Chevin are on our Gallery page.
The Chevin Singers have a constitution and hold an AGM at which audited accounts are presented. The office holders are: Chair, joint Deputy Chairs, Treasurer and Secretary.
We meet weekly and occasional performance opportunities are discussed by the choir members; there is no compulsion to perform. Most songs are taught by ear - so there is no need to be able to read music.
A small weekly fee, currently £3.50, is paid by members to support the choir's activities; anyone can come along their first time for free to try the choir out!
Our inspirational musical director is Beth de Lange - a community musician based in Derby who specialises in community choirs and drumming. We learn a wide variety of World music (including that from the British Isles) - old and new.
