Situated near to the Leisure Centre on Church Street, the church is sited in a quiet picturesque location in a conservation area of this once mining community.
A Grade II* listed building, St Martin of Tours dates from the 12th century and the oldest parts of the church the Priests Vestry and the Tower evidence this fact. Of particular note are the Rood screen (carved by L R Kuzniarz, a Hungarian Refugee), the Reredos of the high Altar (given to commemorate those from the Parish who died in the second World War), the stained glass windows (mainly of the Victorian era with magnificent colours and intricate detail) and the memorials to the Palmer-Morewood family who were for many years generous Benefactors to the church. Their home was at Alfreton Hall which is situated near the church and they were squires of the town.
A thing of beauty is a joy forever. Please join us at one of our services or our Flower Festival or Christmas Tree Festival to appreciate this beautiful Church.
