Inquisitive Family Fun With Sinfonia Viva

Published on Friday 6 October 2023

Derby-based orchestra Sinfonia Viva will entertain young families on Sunday October 22 at the Museum of Making with an afternoon interactive family concert entitled ‘Wait..What?!’

Sinfonia Viva has won several national awards for their family-friendly shows which have been performed to sell-out audiences across the East Midlands for several years.

As part of the Orchestra’s first Derby Concert Season since the pandemic, ‘Wait... What?!’ will explore some of the biggest mysteries asked by curious children everywhere.

One day Sandy realises that there are lots of things in the world that don’t make any sense such as how does the water get into our taps and, where do clouds come from? Through music, illustrations and choreography the concert will help Sandy and the young audience get to the bottom of these and other questions.

‘Wait..What?!’ has been composed especially for children aged seven and under by Jack Ross. He performs live, leading a quartet of Sinfonia Viva musicians, while dancer David Ogle and live illustrator Eleanor Meredith create the sights and shapes of Sandy’s world.  The performance is fully inclusive with BSL interpretation by Sarah Gatford.

After the one-hour show families will have the chance to meet the musicians, take part in family-friendly activities and explore the Museum of Making’s multitude of interactive exhibits.

Every family in the audience will also receive a Wait… What?! book and a code to download the music so they can relive the performance again and again.

The concert is supported by Rolls-Royce PLC and delivered in partnership with Derby Museums as part of a new partnership between the cultural organisations.

Sinfonia Viva’s Marianne Barraclough said: “Our annual family performances pre-pandemic were always sold out and ‘Wait..What?!’ looks to be the same.

“The afternoon is designed to be informal and fun so is ideal for younger children and their families. It is a very relaxed atmosphere with lots of interaction as well as quiet times to give everyone a chance to sit back and enjoy the orchestral music.

“There are then lots of craft and music activities for children to try and the opportunity to meet some of our players.

“We are particularly delighted to be performing at Museum of the Making which is such an inspirational space and captures the imagination of visitors of all ages.

“It is therefore the perfect venue for this concert which beautifully captures the imagination of us all and encourages children to find the answers to the questions in their inquisitive minds.”

Tickets cost £7.50 and are available to book online at https://www.sinfoniaviva.co.uk/Event/wait-what-2023 and for information about the full Derby Concert Season, visit https://www.sinfoniaviva.co.uk/Pages/Events/Category/all-events/Tag/whats-on?Take=6
