Household waste was discovered by Amber Valley Borough Council on 9 April, 2020, fly tipped on Thurston Avenue, Somercotes. Information identifying Darren Steele was located in the rubbish. He later confirmed the waste was his and was issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN) to discharge his liability to prosecution. However, he failed to pay the fine and was summoned to appear in court.
He stated in court that he had paid someone he had found on Facebook to take the waste away for him.
He was fined £300, ordered to pay prosecution costs and clear-up costs of £535.00 and pay a Victim Surcharge of £32.00. A total of £867.00, within 28 days.
Commenting, Amber Valley Borough Council Portfolio Holder for Environment, Councillor John McCabe, said: "The council takes fly-tipping incidents very seriously and we will use all available resources to ensure those responsible are prosecuted. Such incidents not only cost the council a great deal of money cleaning up but have a detrimental effect on local residents and the environment.
"Residents are reminded that they are responsible for disposing of their waste lawfully and should be very wary about who they pay to get rid of it. They should always check that the person or company has a valid waste carrier’s licence and obtain a receipt showing the carrier’s details."
