Preparations In Place For The Heatwave In Derbyshire
With record temperatures expected over the weekend Derbyshire County Council has issued advice to people on how to stay safe in the heat.
Parts of Derbyshire could reach 40 degrees early next week and, as the responsible public health body, the council has suggested people take steps to avoid the worst health impacts.
Older people and people with heart, respiratory and other serious health problems are most vulnerable when the temperature starts to rise. The main risks are dehydration, overheating and heat exhaustion.
Councillor Carol Hart, Cabinet Member for Health and Communities, said the advice was needed in the light of the unusually high temperatures.
“Warm summers are welcome but when temperatures reach those we expect to see this weekend and into next week, lives are at risk and it is important that we advise people on how to keep themselves safe and to look out for others.
“Staying indoors in the hottest parts of the day, keeping well hydrated and ensuring adequate ventilation are the basic ways of avoiding the worst impacts of the heat.”
Leader of Derbyshire County Council Councillor Barry Lewis added: “It is very likely that we will see more of these kinds of incidents as the impacts of climate change are felt more strongly, and as a county council we are considering what extra measures we may be able to put in place now and for future heatwaves.”
Derbyshire County Council is working closely with partners across the Local Resilience Forum to prepare for the wider potential impacts of the heatwave and to ensure that people can access the services and support they need.
Advice on how to feel cooler is on the Derbyshire County Council website and the NHS offers information on the signs and treatment of heatstroke.
