Nigel Mills MP meets local teens on NCS in Alfreton

Published on Thursday 14 July 2022

Nigel Mills MP joined a group of 25 young people from the Amber Valley constituency taking part in the National Citizen Service programme.

Mr Mills met participants during their second week of NCS, which involves planning and carrying out social action projects in their local community. During his visit, he spoke to the young people about their NCS experience,  and staff to hear more about working and supporting local young people.

In Amber Valley NCS is run by Catch22. The programme takes place in the summer holidays and brings together young people from different backgrounds for a unique shared experience, to help them to become better individuals, and in turn better citizens.

The young people in Alfreton told Mr Mills about the social action projects they had planned and carried out which included a fundraising event for Ashgate Hospice involving a cake sale, raffle, speed pool and beer pong.  They also organised music and creative sessions at Meadows Care Home and Alfreton Park Special School where they sang popular songs and ran fun activities like sensory sponge painting, origami for motor skills and wheelchair yoga.

Nigel Mills MP, Conservative MP for Amber Valley, said:

“It was a real pleasure to meet with this engaging group of young people to hear about their social action projects and discuss the range of interesting questions they had prepared.  It was inspiring to learn about how they have been giving back to their community and enjoying time in person together after the challenges of the past two years”

Katie Jones, Team Leader for Catch22, said:

“As a team leader I witness first hand the positive impact that NCS has on the young people taking part. I have worked with NCS for 3 years after graduating from the programme myself.  All the young people taking part gain lots of confidence and leadership.  They come out of their comfort zones and are able to apply these skills to their volunteer work, college interviews and employment.”

Shannon Doughty, 16, who is taking part in NCS, said:

“Before NCS, I was reserved and generally never left my comfort zone.  NCS taught me how to express myself, built my confidence and allowed me to feel comfortable to do what I really want to instead of following the crowd.  I was nervous about going to college by myself before NCS but now I’m confident about speaking to new people and am looking forward to it.”

To date, young people taking part in NCS have delivered more than 15 million hours of community action.

There are  places available for 16-17 year olds to take part in the autumn half-term.  To book your place now, visit wearencs.com/autumn.
