Belper opticians focused on supporting local foodbank

Published on Wednesday 1 December 2021

A BELPER opticians has chosen to support local charity Hope for Belper by becoming a collection point for their foodbank, Food and Community Hub.

Specsavers on King Street is appealing for non-perishable food items and toiletries. All donations will be used by Hope for Belper to create parcels to provide food and basic essentials to people who are referred to the charity in times of crisis.

‘Lots of people visit our store each week, therefore, we see it as a great opportunity to help those less fortunate than ourselves,’ explains Specsavers Belper retail director Uan Gohil. ‘Whether it’s a tin of soup, packet of pasta, a carton of long-life milk or some shampoo or toothpaste, simply adding one extra to your shop or donating a surplus item from your cupboard at home will really make a difference.

‘The effects of the pandemic have hit many families hard and we know that the use of foodbanks had been increasing in recent years. Covid has sadly seen this rise even further which is why we have chosen to support Hope for Belper Food and Community Hub.’

It is estimated tens of thousands of people have turned to foodbanks because of the pandemic. Along with the recent energy price increase and the Universal Credit uplift being withdrawn, foodbanks now need the support of the public more than ever.

The Food and Community Hub, formally The Basic Idea Food Bank, is one of a number of Hope for Belper’s projects providing immediate, practical help for people in need in the local community.  Based at the Baptist Chapel on Bridge Street, next to The Devonshire it is open on Tuesdays and Fridays between 12 noon and 2pm.

Specsavers Belper will be taking donations until 1 January 2022. For more information and an up to date list of the most wanted items go to http://facebook.com/hopeforbelper/

In line with guidance from the NHS, Specsavers is keeping safety measures in place, including the wearing of face coverings, unless there is a medical exemption. This includes maintaining social distancing in stores, continuing to use PPE and sanitising all testing equipment and frames before and after each use. Doors will be kept open whenever possible to improve ventilation and although card payments are still preferred, cash payments will be accepted too.

For more information or to book an appointment, call 01773 824 375 or visit www.specsavers.co.uk/stores/belper
