Alfreton Music Makers Recruiting New Members

Published on Sunday 7 November 2021

After a highly successful annual charity Concert Alfreton Male Voice Choir are looking forward to 2022 and would like to recruit new members to help widen the repertoire, entertain local people and support local charities.

After eighteen months of lockdown but practising by internet, the Choir are together singing and at the October Charity concert an audience of over 150 people were entertained with songs including, Queens, ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, ‘Anthem’ from the musical Chess and ‘The lion Sleeps Tonight’ when the Choirs’ Lion ‘Leonora made an appearance on stage. Guest artist trumpeter John Barker played a number of pieces and also joined the Choir for ‘High on a Hill’ and You’ll Never Walk Alone.’ The Choirs Sagalouts skiffle Group made the audience giggle by singing ‘Does Your Chewing Gum Lose Its Taste on The Bedpost Over Night.’

With just under £1000 on the night the Choir will be making a significant donation to this year’s chosen charity AQUABOX which sends water filters to disaster areas worldwide.

Choir Chairman Mick Mullarkey said, “It’s a great feeling to sing and entertain as a choir after the long lockdown. It’s also incredibly special to support a local charity AQUABOX and the work worldwide they do. But there is no time to rest, 2022 is not far away and we would like to recruit new members to enable our repertoire to grow and entertain.”

Looking forward to 2022 would welcome new members across the choir sections: baritones, basses, and tenors. Although we have just over twenty members a choir needs a good breadth and depth of voices in each section. The repertoire contains a range of songs from shows, pop, comedy and choral with choir props ranging from flags, pirate hats and even a stuffed lion and a skiffle group. Weekly practises are at Palmer Morewood Social Club, Hall Street, Alfreton 630-800pm each Thursday. Each member pays £120 per year to cover costs of the music director, accompanists, insurance and buying music to comply with performing arts regulations. The Choir love to entertain at performances at social clubs, churches, band stands, weddings and funerals. Within the Choir members there is a skiffle groups which is a stark contrast in look, sound, and music when the guys bring out their garish outfits with tea-chest bass, drums, guitars, and ukuleles banging out fifties style favourites like ‘My Old Man's A Dustman.”  Singers do not need to read music or play an instrument, the requirement is, a pleasure of singing and entertaining in a group whilst having fun. Most of the guys stop for an after-practise drink at the club bar.

We are extremely fortunate to have excellent professionals to teach, direct and support: our music director Terry Clay MA, has a wealth of experience with choirs and brass bands, whilst accompanists Lisa Smith and Michael Anthony are very experienced in a range of piano and other instruments.

Mick Mullarkey said, “Alfreton Male Voice is a community choir. We look out for each other, tease each other, entertain for worthy causes but above all,  have fun around music and song. Any guys who would like to consider joining us can easily make contact through the Choir website alfretonmvc.co.uk or Facebook page or why not pop along to practise on any Thursday at 630pm, at Palmer Morewood Social Club, Alfreton.
