Shopping Online For Bargains Safely

Published on Saturday 6 November 2021

As many people will be considering making some purchases in the upcoming Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales and with the run up to Christmas, we wanted to share some advice on how to shop wisely, and take care of your online accounts and your hard earned money!

Firstly, remember to check out prices in more than one place, online and offline! Don't be drawn in by the automatic attraction of a discount!

Beware of unbelievable prices ... they may be exactly that!

Consider how you are paying, and what protection you have - credit cards offer the most protection - alternatively use services with buyer protection such as PayPal, or a debit card rather than paying by bank transfer.

Check that online accounts have strong and separate passwords, and where available, opt for two factor authentication in security settings to protect you further.

If you are considering replacing or upgrading your tech and bagging a bargain in the sales, before you sell, upgrade, exchange or gift your older devices, we urge you to please follow these few steps to help protect your data!

1. Firstly, back up your data, photos, contacts and any other important files on your old device

2. Disconnect the device from cloud accounts and disable security features like ‘find my iPhone’ and ‘android device manager’

3. Don't forget to remove your SIM card and memory cards

4. Ensure you remove any personal information by completing a master or factory reset

If you are disposing of old devices (throwing away/recycling), we strongly advise you to destroy/damage the hard drives of laptops/computers so the information contained cannot be accessed.

If you are gifting tech to a younger member of the family, why not put in parental controls now so they are safe online right from switching on.  NSPCC and InternetMatters websites contain some great advice and guidance.

We put out daily updates on online safety, fraud and scams on our social media channels, why not give us a follow! Look for East Midlands Cyber Secure on Facebook and Twitter to keep yourself, your family and your money safe.
