New electric vehicle charging points in Ripley and Belper

Published on Tuesday 6 July 2021

The accelerating move to electric vehicles will be helped in Amber Valley when eight new dual charging points are installed in two car parks later this summer.

Amber Valley Borough Council has entered into a contract with BP Pulse to deliver the eight dual charge points in Shirley Road Car Park in Ripley and Field Lane Car Park in Belper, giving each car park the capacity to charge eight vehicles at any one time. Installation work will begin shortly, thanks to funding from the Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV).

The total cost of the project is £58,222 with OLEV contributing £42,710 and the remainder being met by Amber Valley Borough Council.

This project aims to encourage the use of electric vehicles and is another important part of the council’s work in responding to the Climate Change Emergency it declared in 2019. It is hoped the facilities will provide vehicle charging for those residents without off-street parking or individual provision.  It is also anticipated the charging points will be used by local businesses and visitors to the town centres.

Commenting, the council’s portfolio holder for environment, Councillor Trevor Ainsworth, said: "We are hoping that the introduction of these electric vehicle charging points will encourage wider adoption of electric vehicles in the borough, especially among drivers who are not able to charge a vehicle at home.

As demand increases, and with the extension of funding availability, we hope to be able to add to these first charging points very soon."
