Derbyshire family conquer walking challenge for deaf children

Published on Friday 4 June 2021

An Ilkeston family has conquered a fundraising challenge to each walk 50km in support of the National Deaf Children's Society.

Donna Green, her partner Daniel Statham and daughter Hermione, 8, accompanied by their two dogs and sometimes by Hermione’s grandparents, took on the charity's '50k in May' challenge by walking around the countryside of Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire as a family. They began their walking challenge on 1 May and completed it on 31 May. Between them, the family has walked a total of 230km.

The family were inspired to take on the challenge for the National Deaf Children's Society because Hermione was diagnosed with deafness at the age of six and now uses a hearing aid. The family has been receiving ongoing support from the charity.

Donna and Daniel live in Ilkeston with Hermione and her older brother Spencer. Donna is a Registered Mental Health Nurse and Daniel works at Rolls Royce.

The family has raised £500, smashing their original target of £150. All the funds raised go direct to the National Deaf Children's Society, which supports the UK’s 50,000 deaf children and their families.

Commenting on their 50k in May challenge, Donna said:

“Hermione is a bright, independent little girl who takes everything in her stride and never lets anything stop her. She’s an inspiration to us all. When she was diagnosed we felt lost with no idea of how to support her or what help was available. The National Deaf Children's Society gave us hope that she can have a bright and happy future.

“We feel honoured to be able to take part in this amazing event and are grateful for the opportunity to be able to give something back to this amazing charity that helps so many people.”

Claire Lubbock, of the National Deaf Children's Society's fundraising team, said:

“Congratulations to Donna and her family on completing our 50k in May challenge for deaf children. It’s so brilliant to see them fundraising for us as a family and we’re so grateful.

“The National Deaf Children’s Society is dedicated to supporting the UK’s 50,000 deaf children and their families. The efforts of selfless fundraisers like Donna and her family help us to keep on doing our vital work, now and into the future.”
