£520,000 boost for open spaces across Amber Valley
A total of 26 different areas around Amber Valley will have play areas and recreational spaces upgraded thanks to money received from building developers as part of their planning permission agreements, following the council's cabinet members giving the go-ahead at a meeting on 17 March.
The section 106 funds are contributions from developers towards the enhancement of public open spaces, and in this latest round of contributions a total of over £520,000 will be used to make improvements.
Among the bigger projects planned are:
- A significant £118,000 for improvements to Aldecar Recreation Ground, which will include new play provision for toddlers, as well as a wider upgrade of facilities to turn it into more of a community park.
- £62,000 to Riddings Park to improve the play area and provide new facilities for young people.
- £70,000 in Heanor as a contribution towards a proposed skate and BMX park at Lockton Ave Park, which has been a long-term aspiration in the town.
- £56,000 for a multi-use games area in Ripley
- £41,000 for improvements to Barn Close Recreation Ground in Quarndon.
- £17,500 for Snowberry Ave in Belper, to develop a new community orchard.
- £28,000 for improvements to Bramble Way play area in Kilburn.
- £14,532 for Somercotes Recreation Ground play area.

Commenting on the planned public open space improvements, portfolio holder for environment, Councillor John McCabe, said: "These plans are a great example of Section 106 agreements in action. Communities across the borough will benefit from a wide range of exciting projects, all of which will make a positive impact on the local environment."
