Derbyshire County Councils School Catering Service celebrates Food for Life Served Here Awards.
As of January 2021, all Primary Schools catered for by Derbyshire Catering Service (DCS) have been accredited with at least the Silver ‘Food for Life Served Here’ Award and all Secondary Schools the Bronze ‘Food for Life Served Here’ Award.
All 384 sites that are served by Derbyshire Catering Service successfully met the Food for Life Served Here (FfLSH) criteria developed by the Soil Association and food industry experts. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic Derbyshire County Council have continued to provide healthy and locally sourced meals.
Derbyshire Catering Service supports local suppliers within the county, food sourcing includes eggs and milk from Holdsworth Foods in Chesterfield, fruit and vegetables from both John Palin and Tomsons’ in Buxton, and Beef from Lowerhurst Organic.
The Food for Life Served Here (FfLSH) scheme also extends to the classroom and is proven to tackle health inequalities by integrating practical learning that reconnects children and young people to the food they eat, following the journey from field to plate.
Derbyshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Young People Councillor Alex Dale said: “I’d like to thank the staff who have worked really hard to gain this accreditation. It’s so important that we serve meals that meet the ‘Food for Life Served Here’ criteria to pupils in school as this means we only use British and Farm Assured meat, MSC Certified fish and free-range eggs.”
Public Health Lead for Physical Activity and Population Nutrition, Jackie Wagstaff said “The Derbyshire Food for Life programme has created a positive food culture across the county and has acted as a stimulus for healthy eating within schools. It’s created a long lasting and sustainable impact around healthy eating, growing food and has helped to provide fresh, nutritious, good quality meals ensuring that children are healthy and happy”.
Alice Littlehailes, Headteacher of St Luke’s CE Primary School continued, “Food for Life Served Here has had a really positive impact on the pupils at St Luke’s. We can be confident that the children have had a healthy nutritious meal which helps them to be good learners. FfLSH also impacts on the curriculum because the link between food and health is made explicit every day. The children have even been given the chance to plan their own menus and have them cooked and served for school lunches.”
