New NHS Staff Survey puts Derbyshire trust top of class for staff confidence in patient care

Published on Sunday 14 March 2021

NHS staff at Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Foundation Trust have given a big ‘thumbs up’ to say they’d recommend it as a place to receive treatment, results of a new national survey show.

The NHS Staff Survey is conducted annually to test the attitudes of nearly one million people working within NHS healthcare organisations about their jobs and workplaces. The 2020 survey was conducted between September and November last year and the results are published today (11 March 2021).

It shows that 87% of respondents working at the Derbyshire community trust would recommend it as a place to receive treatment – giving it the highest confidence rating of any community trust in the country - and 75% would recommend it as a place to work, an increase in approval rating by a massive 4% in just one year.

The survey also looks in depth at specific aspects of the working environment and culture within each trust to gauge staff attitudes to how well their workplace is looking after them.

A total of 2,528 employees of Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Foundation Trust completed the survey, giving a 62.5% response rate, and received amongst the highest approval ratings for equality, diversity and inclusion and staff morale, when benchmarked against other community trusts.

It also scored above average in questions to rate the quality of measures to promote individuals’ wellbeing, quality of care, protection from harassment, safety culture and staff engagement in the organisation.

The results also help to pinpoint where more work is needed. Team working is the only area where results have deteriorated compared with the previous year, with fewer staff feeling satisfied with the way they are able to work as a team.

Darren Tidmarsh, director of people services and organisational effectiveness at Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Our colleagues, like everyone working across the NHS, have faced the most difficult year ever because of the pandemic. They have responded magnificently and I’m very proud of all their efforts and sacrifices for their patients, while also managing their own health and concerns over Covid-19.

“We know that team working has been made more difficult because of the particular circumstances we have faced in the past year. Many non-clinical colleagues have been working from home and many clinical colleagues have worked short-term in different roles to support priority patient care areas, especially at the height of the pandemic response. We are digging down now to see if these factors have affected the survey score for team working this year and will be looking at how we can improve this.

“Taken as a whole, these results give an encouraging picture of how well our staff feel engaged and valued at work. We will use these results to build on further as there is always room for improvement.”

Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Foundation Trust cares for patients across a wide range of services, delivered in people’s own homes and at 11 community hospitals and more than 30 health centres across Derbyshire and in Derby, with nearly 1.5 million patient contacts each year. More details here: Our Services (dchs.nhs.uk). It employs nurses, health visitors, therapists, podiatrists and many other health professionals across Derbyshire and Derby.

Darren Tidmarsh added: “We greatly value these survey findings, based on anonymous feedback from our staff, as a reliable indicator of what we are getting right and where we can improve. As well as the key findings there is a lot of other data in the results which really helps us to pinpoint where we can build on these good results. That means both as an employer and as a place where people want to come for their care.”

The full results are viewable here: NHS Staff Surveys - NHS Staff Survey 2020. The results are primarily intended for use by NHS organisations to help them review and improve staff experience.
