Community Testing Sites To Open Across Derbyshire

Published on Wednesday 24 February 2021

Two new community testing centres for people who don’t have coronavirus symptoms open in Derbyshire this week.

The two centres – in Erewash and Derbyshire Dales – will mean there are testing centres in each district and borough across Derbyshire.

In Erewash the new centre opens at West Park Leisure Centre, Wilsthorpe Road, Long Eaton, at noon tomorrow.

Testing will take place from 9am to 7pm, seven days a week. However there will be no community testing available on March 4, 22 and 30 as the centre hosts regular blood donor sessions which will be going ahead as normal on these days.

The testing centre in Derbyshire Dales opens at 9am on Friday 26 February in the Members’ Room at County Hall, Smedley Street, Matlock and will also open from 9am to 7pm, seven days a week.

Meanwhile, the testing centre in Heanor will move to a new location which opens at 9am on Thursday 25 February at the Wilmot Street Centre, Wilmot Street, Heanor. Testing here will take place from 9am to 7pm, seven days a week.

Up until then, people who live and work locally can still get tested at the current site at William Gregg VC Leisure Centre, Hands Road, until 7pm on tomorrow (24 February).

And a new centre opening at Hillstown Village Hall, Nesbit Street, Hills Town, will offer community testing from 9am on Monday 1 March at 9am. It will open from 9am to 7pm, seven days a week.

This will replace the current sites at the Post Mill Centre and Shirebrook Village Hall which will continue to offer community testing up to 4pm on Sunday 28 February.

One in three people who have the virus don’t have symptoms and could be infecting other people without realising.

People who are still going out to work and mixing with colleagues or the public are encouraged to get tested regularly to stop the spread of Covid-19.

More than 33,000 tests have been carried out at Derbyshire’s community testing centres up to February 12, with 419 (1.3%) of people testing positive.

Staff are on hand to help people who test positive and need to self-isolate, including practical support with shopping and picking up prescriptions and any financial support they may be entitled to.

Derbyshire’s Director of Public Health Dean Wallace said: “It’s great news that rates of infection are falling across Derbyshire, as they are nationally.

“However, the virus is still out there and we need to make sure we are breaking the chain of transmission, especially among people who are still going out to work and mixing with colleagues and the public.

“For peace of mind, I’d urge anyone without symptoms to get tested regularly to make sure they aren’t unwittingly passing the virus on to colleagues, family or friends.

“Let’s do this for Derbyshire so that we can all get back to doing the things we love more quickly.”

There’s no need to book an appointment at a community testing centre – just call in. To check waiting times visit www.derbyshire.gov.uk/communitytesting

People with symptoms are asked not to visit the community testing centres. Anyone with symptoms – a new, continuous cough, a high temperature or change to taste or smell – should ring NHS 119 or book a test online at www.gov.uk/get-coronavirus-test

Council Leader Councillor Barry Lewis said: “Getting these testing centres open has been a huge team effort from everyone involved here at the county council.

“We’re grateful to colleagues from Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service who have helped move equipment round the county and I’d also like to thank our district and borough council colleagues who have helped in providing venues for us to use.

“Getting a test doesn’t mean you can’t still catch the virus, so please continue to wash your hands regularly, keep your distance and wear a face covering unless you are exempt."

Those attending are asked not to bring bags or other items with them that they don’t consider to be essential, but are asked to bring a fully charged smart phone if they have one. Parents or guardians are asked to accompany those aged 11 to 16.
