EU settlement scheme - Derbyshire Law Centre

Published on Wednesday 17 February 2021

Derbyshire Law Centre is part of a project assisting vulnerable EU citizens and their families in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire, including the cities, to apply to the EU Settlement Scheme. They have been involved in projects supporting EUSS applications since its introduction, particularly with complex cases. Their advisers, Tony McIlveen and Beth Holt are both solicitors and immigration specialists.

For many, making an application for pre settled or settled status under the Government’s EU Settlement Scheme is not so straightforward. This may be because of age or ill health, domestic violence, or homelessness, in care or care leaver, or because of previous criminal convictions.

Time is now running out as the scheme will close on 30 June 2021. The lockdown restrictions are not making it easy for anyone to make the application, but it is vital they do in order to ensure they can continue to legally reside in the UK.

Derbyshire Law Centre are there to help and it is free. They can help people submit their application, obtain evidence of residence in the UK and help obtain evidence of nationality (passport, ID card). They can also make representations to the Home Office in complex cases. For example, there will be non EU nationals with British children or EU national children who may be eligible to apply under the EUSS scheme, but are not aware of their rights or too scared to make themselves known to the Home Office.

They can also advise and support other agencies who are supporting EU nationals and their families, especially those working with particular communities such as Roma or Traveller groups. They already work with a number of homelessness charities supporting EU nationals or their family members.

Although the Law Centre office is currently closed, their phone line is still open, they can still be contacted by email or via their website at derbyshirelawcentre.org.uk, and their staff are all working from home. Please get in touch if you are aware of EU citizens and their families who might need help with signing up to the scheme, or you are aware of organisations working with people who might need their assistance. Their contact details can be found below.
