Eight Amber Valley parks retain Green Flag status

Published on Monday 19 October 2020

All eight of Amber Valley Borough Council's Green Flag parks have retained their prestigious status and again been recognised as among the UK's very best green spaces.

Belper Cemetery, Belper River Gardens, Belper Parks Local Nature Reserve, Crays Hill QE2 Park in Swanwick, Crossley Park in Ripley, Heanor Memorial Park, Pennytown Ponds Local Nature Reserve in Somercotes and Riddings Park, have all been recognised by the Green Flag Award Scheme as some of the very best in the world.

A record-breaking 2,061 UK parks and green spaces have received a 2020 Green Flag Award - the mark of a quality park or green space.

The Green Flag Award scheme, managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy under licence from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard for the management of recreational outdoor spaces across the United Kingdom and around the world.

Amber Valley Borough Council Environment Portfolio Holder, Councillor John McCabe said, "We are highly delighted to once again receive eight Green Flag Awards. In the last few months, we have truly discovered how much quality green spaces matter to residents and visitors, and these awards celebrate the dedication that goes into maintaining the wonderful sites to such a high standard.”

Paul Todd, Green Flag Award Scheme Manager, said: "Parks and green spaces have never been more important for the physical and mental health of everyone.

"All the research shows that spending time in good-quality green space can improve people’s health and wellbeing, that is why it is important that they are managed to the recognised standard of the Green Flag Award. This is now something that millions more recognise after the challenges of the past six months. All those involved in the Green Flag Award should be congratulated on their achievement."
