Learn More About A Career In Care At County Council Events

Published on Tuesday 20 June 2017

People on the hunt for a job or looking to change careers will have the chance to find out more about a rewarding career in care work as Derbyshire County Council takes part in local recruitment events.

The events will take place in Swadlincote, Burton-on-Trent and Chesterfield and will give people the opportunity to have a chat with the council’s adult care staff and have any questions answered.

Derbyshire County Council is looking for people to join its valued care teams helping older and disabled people in the county lead dignified lives.

More than 40 vacancies are currently available, including positions as care workers in residential homes as well as in the community to help people live independently at home. There are also senior care worker positions available and other roles including catering and cleaning.

Staff from the county council will be on hand to explain more about being a care worker - and help with applications – at the following job fairs:

• Swadlincote Jobcentre Plus, the Delph Centre, Market Street, Wednesday 28 June, 9am-12pm.
• Burton-on-Trent Jobcentre Plus, Crown House, New Street, Wednesday 19 July, 9am-12pm.
• Proact Stadium, Sheffield Road, Chesterfield. Friday 28 July, 10am-1pm.

Derbyshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Adult Care Councillor Jean Wharmby said: “Helping vulnerable people maintain their independence and live healthy, happy lives is a priority for us and attracting the best staff is key to that.

“We help our care staff through every stage of their careers, offering excellent training and support as well as clear progression paths. You don’t need qualifications and we’ll provide any equipment or uniforms you might need.

“If you’d like a really rewarding job with great benefits and room to progress come along to one of the events, have a chat and see what a career in care work could do for you.”

Derbyshire County Council employs around 1,500 care workers across Derbyshire, helping older and disabled people with everyday tasks, such as washing and dressing, eating meals and taking medication.

For people joining its teams, there’s a clear career structure in place and lots of support for those looking to progress. The authority pays above the national living wage, with extra pay for unsocial hours, five weeks holiday a year (pro-rata), and a good pension scheme. Travel time is paid and there are no zero hours contracts.

The authority also has 64 apprenticeship places available for young people looking to start a career in care – go to www.derbyshire.gov.uk/apprenticeships to find out more.

Care worker vacancies are available in the county council’s community care centres Meadow View in Darley Dale and Florence Shipley in Heanor. There are also vacancies for care workers in the community across the county, including Bakewell, Belper, Clowne, Long Eaton and neighbouring towns and villages.

The adult care sector is one of the few job sectors that is growing. Currently, Derbyshire’s population of people aged over 65 is around 160,300. By 2020, that’s expected to increase to more than 180,000, with 15% of those people over the age of 75.
