Council considers bowls options in Heanor
Plans to secure a sustainable and improved future for two Heanor bowls clubs are currently being discussed with Amber Valley Borough Council.
Linked to the discussions with Heanor Town Football Club to take over the lease of their Mayfield Avenue facilities, the option for Heanor Town Bowls Club and Heanor Excelsior Bowls Club to take over the lease of their neighbouring green is also a possibility.
One option being looked at is for disused tennis courts, adjacent to the bowls green, to be used to extend the nearby residential development. Such a deal could create the funding required to build a brand new pavilion for the two bowls clubs.
Commenting on this option, Amber Valley Borough Council’s Portfolio Holder for Environment, Cllr Chris Short said: “Discussions, with the interested parties, are at a very early stage, and all we are doing at the moment is working out whether this is feasible.
“However, given that the tennis courts have not been used since the 1970’s and that bringing them back into use is not a financially sustainable option for the Council, the prospect of greatly improving the bowls facilities for the two clubs does have considerable merit.”
