As part of Dementia Awareness Week (14 – 20 May 2017), Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service has formally pledged a commitment to support and raise awareness of Dementia, by signing a Dementia Friendly Charter.

The Charter, which was signed by Chief Fire Officer/Chief Executive Terry McDermott and Chair of the Fire & Rescue Authority, Cllr. Steve Marshall-Clarke, outlines how the Service will educate, promote and continue to collaborate with partner agencies, to increase awareness and engagement regarding dementia within the community and in all that we do.

Alex Johnson, Area Manager for Prevention and Inclusion said: “Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service has been a key member of the Derbyshire Dementia Alliance for a number of years now and it was therefore fitting that we made this pledge to show our ongoing commitment to join the fight against Dementia, the 21st century’s biggest killer.

“As a Fire & Rescue Service we already support families that may be caring for someone with Dementia, or a person living well with dementia in their own home, and we want to ensure that we continue to provide the best possible advice and service, both now and in the future.”

As part of the Charter, throughout Dementia Awareness Week, Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service will be delivering Dementia Friend Sessions to its employees, as well as colleagues from Derbyshire Constabulary.

It is hoped that over the week the Service will sign up 100 new Dementia Friends.
