This Girl Can is coming to Ripley!
This Girl Can, a campaign which aims to break down barriers to women getting active, is coming to Ripley with the launch of Ripley Girls Can.
It aims to inspire local women by championing the successes of people just like them and is introducing ‘ambassadors’, who will be on hand to help and encourage people trying activities for the first time.
Organisers Derbyshire Sport are keen to hear from Ripley women – whether they have a story to share, need help to get active, or would be interested in becoming a This Girl Can ambassador.
To kick-start the campaign local women are also invited to a Party in the Dark, where participants will be able to enjoy music, quizzes and bingo.
They will also have the chance to try activities such as Clubbercise, Xena and Sh’Bam in short manageable blocks – all while helping to raise money for a worthy local charity.
The Party in the Dark will be held on Friday, June 16 at Ripley Leisure Centre from 7.30pm to 9.30pm.
Tickets must be booked in advance, and can be purchased for a suggested minimum donation of £5 each. To book visit: www.derbyshiresport.co.uk/events/ripleypartyinthedark
“We want to break down the barriers that women face when they think about being active,” said Andrea Stone, Sports Development Manager at Derbyshire Sport. “We want to show them that women just like them are active, having fun, and making new friends.
“We also want to hear from them – what do they enjoy doing, what keeps them from being active, what are their fears and what would they like to do.
“All the activities, personal stories and ambassadors that are shared through Ripley Girls Can will be specific to the area, making this a very local campaign.”

Ripley Girls Can follows the hugely successful national campaign This Girl Can, led by Sport England, which aims to help close the gender gap of 1.73 million fewer women playing sport compared to men.
In its first year, the This Girl Can films were viewed 37 million times on Facebook and YouTube alone, resulting in 2.8 million more women doing some or more activity.
