Find Out Who The Candidates Are Standing In Local May Election

Published on Sunday 9 April 2017

Candidates standing in the Derbyshire County Council local elections on 4 May 2017 have been named.

All 64 seats across the county will be contested by 270 candidates as the new county council is elected for the first time in four years.

Voters can find out who is standing in their area and what party they represent by visiting the county council’s website at www.derbyshire.gov.uk/elections

Prospective councillors are campaigning for the right to make important decisions on council matters including spending on services like schools, roads, caring for older people and safeguarding children.

The deadline for registering to vote is midnight on Thursday 13 April, and people not registered by this deadline will not be able to vote on 4 May.

To highlight the importance of voting the county council is running a campaign – Use Your Vote – to encourage residents not to miss out on the chance to decide who runs the council for the next four years and represent more than 782,000 local people.

Derbyshire residents can register to vote by visiting www.aboutmyvote.co.uk and can use the same website to check what district they live in if unsure, by entering their postcode.

People can also get more information or register to vote by contacting the electoral registration office at their district or borough council and there’s also a wide range of information and useful links to district and borough councils on the county council’s website www.derbyshire.gov.uk/elections

As well as casting their vote by visiting a polling station on the day, there are other options available – by post or voting by proxy. People need to be registered to vote and must apply for these options, which they can do by visiting www.aboutmyvote.co.uk or contacting their local district or borough council. The deadline for applications for postal voting is 5pm on Tuesday 18 April. After that date, people may still be able to apply for a vote by proxy, and they should contact their district or borough council for more details.

Registered voters may have already received their polling cards from their district or borough council through the post, and if not they should be arriving shortly. The polling card will tell people where their polling station is. However, residents registered to vote do not need their polling card to vote.

Polling stations will be open on Thursday 4 May from 7am to 10pm.

The county council website is packed with useful information on the forthcoming local election and previous elections, registering to vote and applying for postal and proxy votes. It also has links to all district and borough council websites.

Election results from all divisions will be published in real time at www.derbyshire.gov.uk/elections and people can also register to receive results by email. Results will also be available by following the county council on Twitter and Facebook.
