Ripley cops feature in youngsters art as local school aims for top spot in national competition

Published on Wednesday 5 April 2017

Officers from the Ripley Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team have helped youngsters at Lons Infant School by posing for pictures as they aim for a top spot in a national sustainable travel art competition.

It’s for the Modeshift STARS Art of Stars competition, where schools are invited to enter artwork that captures the benefits of active travel to and from school.

PC Neil Hopwell’s silhouette is featured in Lons Infant School’s ‘Evolution of the Cyclist’ entry, and PC Ruth Platts pictured in an Andy Warhol inspired photo, which is a recreation of an archived photograph of a Metropolitan police officer directing three youngsters on a bicycle.

The work also compliments the ongoing partnership with local schools, police and council to engage pupils and parents and promote the idea of making active and safe journeys to school, including the medium of art.

For Lons infant school this has also specifically has also contributed to their topic on ‘people who help us’ and the work of different artists.

PC Hopwell said: “The youngsters at Lons Infant School have produced some excellent artwork and we were delighted to have been able to take part.

“I wish them lots of luck in the Art of STARS competition, and look forward to continuing to work with the school to encourage active and sustainable journeys to and from school.”

The Modeshift STARS national Art of STARS competition ran throughout March and winning entries will go onto their National Art of STARS wall planner.

Wall planners are distributed to schools throughout England and promote active travel campaigns for the 2017/18 academic year.

Modeshift STARS is the national schools awards scheme that has been established to recognise schools that have demonstrated excellence in supporting cycling, walking and other forms of sustainable travel.
