Peter Goodman proposed as new Chief Constable for Derbyshire Constabulary
Peter Goodman QPM is to be put forward as the preferred candidate to take over as Derbyshire’s next Chief Constable.
Derbyshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner Hardyal Dhindsa has notified the Police and Crime Panel of his intentions, and a Confirmation Hearing has been arranged by the Panel, to be held on 13 April 2017 at County Hall, Matlock.
The news follows a robust recruitment process incorporating a stakeholder discussion, from which feedback was provided to the interview panel; media exercises; a presentation covering the key risks and threats to Derbyshire Constabulary prepared by the candidate; and a formal interview.
The seven-strong panel comprised Hardyal Dhindsa; his Deputy Kevin Gillott; outgoing Chief Constable Mick Creedon; Derbyshire’s Chief Fire Officer Terry McDermott; Prof Kevin Bampton, Director of the International Policing and Justice Institute at Derby University; Rachael Livingstone, Chief Executive of Impact Derby; and independent panel member Deirdre Newham.
Dhindsa said: “This was a really searching interview process, after which we were all agreed that Peter has what it takes to lead Derbyshire Constabulary into the future, sustaining and building upon its good performance to date.
“He has a wealth of policing experience in Derbyshire, across the region and at national level where amongst other areas, he has been leading the work to tackle cyber-crime, one of the biggest challenges facing policing today. I am confident that he will do an outstanding job and I look forward to working with him to deliver my Police and Crime Plan.”
Peter Goodman, currently Derbyshire’s Deputy Chief Constable, said: “I’m honoured and humbled to be chosen as the Commissioner’s preferred candidate as Derbyshire’s next Chief Constable.
“I’ve worked in Derbyshire for over 10 years so I know that it’s a great organisation providing fantastic policing services to the people who live, work and visit this wonderful county.”
Independent panel member, Deirdre Newham, commented: “The whole interview process has been rigorous and challenging.
"All the panel members were able to ask searching questions to ensure that the candidate met the required standard for this extremely challenging role.”
The search for a new Chief Constable follows the announcement that Chief Constable Mick Creedon is to retire in May this year.
