Would-Be Drivers Urged To Get In To Gear

Published on Saturday 1 April 2017

Young would-be motorists are being urged to take advantage of pre-driver training courses before they take to the road.

Derbyshire County Council is offering the county’s 15 to 17-year-olds the chance to participate in a day-long driving and classroom session before they get behind the wheel.

The classroom session will provide guidance on choosing the right driving instructor, the cost of learning to drive and maintaining a vehicle, the dangers of driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol, driving while distracted by passengers and mobile phones, and the Highway Code.

Practical off-road sessions will cover moving off safely and correctly, steering an accurate course, changing up and down gears, braking safely and stopping.

The training, which runs from 9am until 3.30pm, will be delivered by council road safety officers and approved driving instructors.

Derbyshire County Council’s Service Director Highways, Geoff Pickford, said: “Road safety remains a top priority for us and we are committed to investing in initiatives aimed at helping to keep young people safe on the county’s roads.

Recent figures show that in the 10 years from 2005 the number of young drivers killed or seriously injured on Derbyshire’s roads dropped from 57 to 21.

Mr Pickford added: “It is encouraging to see that courses like this pre-driver training are having an impact and contributing to a consistent downwards trend in the number of young people killed or seriously injured each year on the county’s roads.

Training, which runs from 9am to 3.30pm, takes place:

• Sunday 9 April, Derbyshire County Council offices, County Hall, Matlock
• Tuesday 11 April, Staveley Fire Station, Crompton Road, Staveley
• Thursday 20 April, Darley Moor Race Track, Ashbourne
• Tuesday 25 July, The Long Eaton School, Thoresby Road, Long Eaton
• Wednesday 26 July, Staveley Fire Station, Crompton Road, Staveley
• Tuesday 15 August, Staveley Fire Station, Crompton Road, Staveley
• Wednesday 16 August, The Long Eaton School, Thoresby Road, Long Eaton
• Tuesday 24 October, The Long Eaton School, Thoresby Road, Long Eaton
• Wednesday 25 October, Staveley Fire Station, Crompton Road, Staveley
• Sunday 29 October, Derbyshire County Council offices, County Hall, Matlock.

Sessions, which cost £35, must be booked at first.gear@derbyshire.gov.uk or by calling the council’s road safety team on 01629 538060.
