Don't Miss The Chance To Have Your Say - Register To Vote Now
Residents who want to have their say in the Derbyshire County Council elections on Thursday 4 May are being urged to check they are registered to vote.
All 64 county council seats will be available as a new council is elected for the first time in four years.
People who are not registered to vote by midnight on Thursday 13 April will not be able to cast their vote this time.
To highlight the importance of voting the county council has launched a campaign - Use Your Vote - to encourage residents not to miss out on the chance to decide who runs the council for the next four years and represent more than 782,000 local people who live in the county.
One of the reasons people miss out on the chance to vote is that they assume they are registered when they are not.
This could be for a number of reasons including people who have moved house recently and assume they are automatically registered at their new address because they pay council tax. However, the two processes are completely separate and registering to pay council tax does not mean you are automatically on the electoral register.
People who have turned 18 since the last election in their area may not realise that this is their chance to vote for the first time, and may not be registered.
Derbyshire residents can register to vote by visiting www.aboutmyvote.co.uk to find out more. They can also use this website to check what district they live in if unsure, by entering their postcode.
People can also get more information or register to vote by contacting the electoral registration office at their district or borough council.
There is also information about voting and elections, with links to district and borough councils, on the county council’s website at www.derbyshire.gov.uk/vote or people can call the Electoral Commission’s information helpline on 0800 3 280 280.
As well as casting their vote by visiting a polling station on the day, there are other options available - by post or voting by proxy. People need to be registered to vote and must apply for these options, which they can do by visiting www.aboutmyvote.co.uk or contacting their local district or borough council. The deadline for applications for postal voting is 5pm on Tuesday 18 April. After that date, people may still be able to apply for a vote by proxy, and they should contact their district or borough council for more details.
Derbyshire County Council Chief Executive Ian Stephenson said: “Whether it’s schools, libraries, roads, buses, home care staff or waste disposal, everyone in Derbyshire will use one of our services or may need them in the future. That’s why it’s so important that people have their say on 4 May.
“There are more than 604,000 eligible voters in Derbyshire and we hope they will take the time to use their vote.”
Polling stations will be open from 7am to 10pm on 4 May and people who are registered should receive polling cards through the post before the election. Polling cards will tell them where to vote.
Registered voters who do not receive a polling card will still be able to vote.
The votes will be counted the next day with results announced throughout Friday 5 May as they come in.
Derbyshire County Council will be running a full results service on 5 May which will be available via its website. More details will be announced shortly.
