Fighting the Threat to Derbyshire's Peregrine Population
Peregrines are already paired up and back at nest sites across Derbyshire as we prepare for another breeding season.
The question is, how safe are our Peregrines from wildlife criminals?
Individuals, wildlife organisations and wildlife crime officers from Derbyshire Police coming together this afternoon to discuss how best to tackle the ongoing persecution facing our peregrines here in Derbyshire.
Tim Birch, Head of Living Landscapes, Derbyshire Wildlife Trust, knows only too well the threat facing these stunning birds. “Peregrines are the jewel in the crown of the natural world, yet they continue to face ongoing persecution in Derbyshire from wildlife criminals. Early spring is the time when our peregrines start to think about breeding and this is when they are most at risk from egg collectors and chick thieves”.
A meeting of this kind at the Derbyshire Wildlife Trust office is a first for Derbyshire and will bring together all the key people and organisations who are already working hard to protect Derbyshire’s peregrines. There’s high hopes that by working collaboratively, this influential group will be able to secure a brighter future for these birds.
Tim goes on to say “We will be stepping up our efforts this spring to protect our peregrines and urge the public to report any suspicious activity linked to peregrines (or any other birds of prey) to the police as soon as possible”.
Derbyshire Police stated “Birds of prey, such as the peregrine falcon, are fully protected by legislation which makes it an offence to steal their eggs or chicks or to deliberately kill or injure them. People who interfere with the nests of these birds or steal from them are showing a clear disregard for the law surrounding this species. We would encourage everyone to be vigilant during the coming nesting season and report any suspicious activity around known nesting sites to Derbyshire Police immediately. We hope that with all the partner organisations working closely together to protect these birds, this will be a successful breeding season for the peregrine falcons in Derbyshire.”
Derbyshire Police takes reports of wildlife crime very seriously and would urge anyone with any information relating to this or any form of wildlife crime to contact the police immediately on 101 or 999 if the crime is in progress.
