An update from Pye Hill & District Male Voice Choir
The choir went on tour over the early May Bank Holiday weekend to Croydon, Surrey, stopping at Windsor on route. The Saturday concert took place at St. Mary the Blessed Virgin Church, Addington which dates from 1080 where guest soloist Vivien Easom, Mezzo Soprano performed ‘Silent Noon’ R. Vaughan Williams, ‘June’ Roger Quilter, ‘Love Can Only Tell Thee’ Richard Capell, ‘Ave Maria’ Bach/Gounod and ‘The Holy City’ by Stephen Adams. Vivien has won many awards including the Mario Lanza Opera Prize and was accompanied by the distinguished pianist and conductor Luke Green.
The second concert took place at the United Reform Church, Woking. Over the weekend solos were performed by Bill Walker ‘Reviewing the Situation’ from Oliver Lionel Bart, Dave Braithwaite, ‘The Gas-Man Cometh’ Flanders and Swan, Colin Dutton ‘Drink to Me Only with Thine Eyes’ and ‘I Believe’; Rosemary Jones ‘If There Were Dreams to Sell’.
Both concerts were well attended and in total raised £720.00 for local charities and churches. Further highlights of a very successful weekend included a visit to Brighton, a tour of London landmarks on the way home and the reception and hospitality received at the Ship Inn, Ripley, Surrey following the second concert where the landlady and locals treated the choir and friends to free drinks all evening and the singing continued….
On Saturday18 May the choir held a joint concert at Ironville Church with Rolls Royce Ladies Choir which was very well attended. The Pye Hill & District Male Voice Choir performed ‘When the Saints Go Marching In’, ‘The Rose’, My Lord What a Morning’, You Raise Me Up (with Dave Gibbon solo), ‘Kings of Swing’, ‘Gwahaddiad’, ‘Bright Eyes’, ‘Nessum Dorma’, and ‘The Rythem of Life’. Solos were performed by Les Martin ‘My Way’ and Dave Braithwaite ‘Make You Feel My Love’.
The Rolls Royce Ladies Choir performed ‘Gloria’, ‘Hero’, ‘You are So Beautiful, ‘Dancing in the Street’, ‘Adiemas’, ‘In my Dreams’, ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ and ‘All That Jazz’. Solos were performed by Sue Sanders ‘Another Suitcase, another Hall’ and by ‘The Nightingales’ ‘Diamonds are Forever’. Joint choir items performed were ‘Jerusalem’ and ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’.
The choir’s next concert is at 7.30 p.m, 8th June at Ripley All Saints Church.
