Drivers reminded to lock their vehicles following thefts

Published on Friday 24 May 2013

Police are reminding motorists to make sure they lock their vehicles and keep valuables out of sight after a number of thefts.

It is after a number of incidents in Chesterfield, North East Derbyshire and the Amber Valley where valuables have been taken from cars which were left insecure.

In Brimington, Chesterfield, three cars were targeted overnight between Monday, May 20 and Tuesday, May 21. Thieves stole two sat navs, a laptop and an iPod from the cars which were parked on Manor Avenue, Pingle Grange and Barry Road.

A sat- nav was stolen from a Ford Transit parked on Market Place at Riddings, sometime between 5pm and 10.30pm on Tuesday, May 21.

The most recent was over in Dronfield Woodhouse. At around 10.45am on Wednesday, May 22 a garden strimmer was taken from a Land Rover parked on Holmesfield Road.

Community Safety Inspector Russ Dakin said: “Everyone has a part to play in reducing crime, and you can help by making sure you lock your vehicles whenever they are unattended, whether overnight or even if you are just leaving it for a moment.

“Crime is falling across the area but we have seen a number of recent incidents where valuable items have been left in an insecure car or on show. Please don’t be complacent, lock your vehicle and remove any valuables.”

People are also advised to park in a busy, well-lit area, or in a secure garage and to report any suspicious activity.

Insp. Dakin added: “I would also ask for residents to be vigilant and if they see anything they think could be suspicious around vehicles to contact police on the non emergency number.”

Anyone with information should contact Derbyshire police on 101, the non emergency number, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
