Man charged with going equipped as police target burglaries in Somercotes and Riddings
A man has been charged with going equipped to steal as police work to target burglaries in the Somercotes area.
The 38-year-old local man was arrested on Monday, April 22 after he was found carrying tools and a torch, which officers believed he could have used to break into homes.
He was later charged with the offence of going equipped to steal and was set to appear before magistrates in Chesterfield on Wednesday, April 24.
The same man also faced charges of handling stolen goods in relation to three other incidents in the area.
Officers from the Somercotes and Riddings Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team are carrying out patrols in the area to help deter burglaries following a number of reports in the area.
The latest incident happened in the early hours of Sunday, April 21. Tools were stolen from a garage on Pennine Avenue at Riddings.
As well as carrying out patrols, the team have also been speaking to local residents and offering crime prevention advice at surgeries in both Somercotes and Riddings.
PC Chris Anthony, of the Somercotes and Riddings Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “Our team is working hard to target burglaries in the area, and to keep our neighbourhood safe. We would also ask local residents to help us by keep an eye out for any suspicious activity, and reporting it to us.
“We would also advise people to take a look at how secure their sheds and garages are, and to consider fitting an alarm, security lighting or a better quality lock. If you store anything which is especially valuable, like bikes or sports equipment, it is also worth noting down any frame or serial numbers, taking a photos and security marking the items. This will help to deter thieves and can also increase the chances of officers identifying any property which is recovered.”
If you notice anything suspicious, or have any information about the incidents, call Derbyshire police on 101, the non emergency number. Alternatively contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
