A busy weekend at Heage Windmill!
The weekend of Saturday and Sunday May 11/12th is going to be a busy one at Heage Windmill! Firstly its National Mills weekend, an event organised by the SPAB Mills Section, when 100’s of wind and water mills all of the UK will open their doors to the public. For more info on this event see http://www.nationalmillsweekend.co.uk/
But as an additional attraction some very attractive ladies and gents are going to be stripped in public at the mill ! But don’t get embarrassed - they are in fact a flock of 12 pedigree High Edge Coloured Ryeland sheep, owned by Debbie Bostock of Heage, who are going to be sheared on the mill site by Philip Fisher during the day, on 11th May, – and twelve lambs will be there, being cared for by their mothers, in their pens . Philip, a professional shearer from South York’s , is a young man with a rare ability to shear sheep well, either with electric shears or by hand. He may do both during the day. His parents and sister will also be there and will assist Philip, but also hand-spin and knit and they will have some articles for sale. They are hoping to go from shearing to finished product during the day- we shall see! All fleeces will be rolled and some may be on sale, http://www.singingshearer.co.uk/ for more info
On Sunday the 12th there will be two attractions. John Allsop, a local man from Heage, and his friends will again be bringing their much admired collection of vintage tractors , most of which have been restored to gleam in the sun! At least 12 are expected to be on display .This a chance to perhaps renew your acquaintance with an old friend?
Finally ,again on the 12th, we are again hosting the Nunsfield Radio club who will set a up a mobile radio station and will search to make contact with other radio clubs who are attending mills open events today. Additionally we also know that it is National Mills day in Holland where at least five mills there will be on air – so there is a challenge a foot to contact all of them!
And after enjoying all the above activities there will still be the opportunity to be taken on a guided tour round the 200 year windmill where we expect our home milled flour will be on sale………….
