Amber Valley Hornets Create a BUZZ!
Amber Valley Hornets Ladies Hockey Club have just been crowned Derbyshire Hockey league Division 2 champions - finishing the season undefeated in the league by beating Ilkeston 8-0 at the weekend. The club based at Mill School in Ripley are only in their third year and are already looking forward to playing Division 1 hockey next season. They also reached the semi-finals of the cup with their 2nd team who have just completed there first season in the league finishing a respectable 4th and reaching the final of the plate competition which takes place on the 27th April against Burton.
With a focus on low costs, a thriving social aspect and fun the club now has over 40 members from 13 to nearly 50 the club have grown quickly and gained a reputation for being affordable and inclusive. This was one of the main reasons the players who formed the club in 2010 started the team - as they felt the costs of other local clubs were high and concentrated on young talent.
Captain of the first team Dawn Spendlove commented "We've had such an amazing first 2 seasons and to be playing Division 1 hockey next season is a brilliant achievement for the club" she added "i'd also like to thank Crosshill Garage, The Bulls Head in Denby and Derbyshire County Council for support and funding through their Community priorities programme as this allowed us to subsidise the cost of playing and provide equipment to new players who otherwise would simply not have been able to participate" Emily Hall, Chairperson of the club also said "We have seen first hand the impact participating in sport can have and the positive impact it brings to peoples lives, not just in terms of health but also we have seen members confidence grow, communication improve and the social side of the club has certainly had a positive impact too".
Charlotte Welsby has made a clean sweep of the awards taking player of the year (voted by the opposition each game), Players player of the year and Top scorer. Anyone wishing to try hockey are welcome to attend training sessions which are held at Mill Hill School from 7-8pm on Wednesday evenings, with 2 teams all abilities are catered for so if you've not played since school and fancy having a go again or have never played - why not give it a try.
