PCC keeps his promise to relaunch Derbyshire Alert system
A police messaging system which alerts local people to criminal activity and provides timely community safety advice has today (Tuesday) been relaunched across Derbyshire.
Derbyshire Police and Crime Commissioner Hardyal Dhindsa has funded the Derbyshire Alert system, honouring a commitment he made during his election campaign, so that residents and businesses can continue to receive information that could help reduce their risk of becoming a victim of crime.
The messaging service, which was temporarily suspended while funding was sought, is currently under development in partnership with Neighbourhood Watch.
As part of an initial roll-out, local and countywide messages will be delivered by email only to those who sign up to the scheme however other methods are currently under review.
The PCC has funded a full-time digital engagement officer who will spearhead the Derbyshire Alert service, along with Neighbourhood Watch partners, while also working on other projects to increase the Commissioner's social media and digital communications reach and build stronger relationships with the public.
In relaunching Derbyshire Alert, Mr Dhindsa said: "I'm delighted to be in a position to reinstate this very popular alert service which helps to keep people safe, protect their property and make life more difficult for opportunists.
"The scheme enables Derbyshire Police to contact thousands of people at the click of a button and offers an invaluable warning service while also encouraging neighbourhoods to unite together to tackle crime.
"In the past, this excellent system has helped police arrest suspects' moments after committing their crimes and I'm hopeful that it will continue to do so in future as well as building our community intelligence picture.
"I'm very grateful for the commitment of Neighbourhood Watch in pushing this service forward and helping my office to enhance the link between the police and the people they protect."
Tony Grace is chair of the Derbyshire Neighbourhood Watch Scheme. He said that he was absolutely delighted at the co-operation Neighbourhood Watch is now receiving from the Commissioner and his team. He added: "I'm also totally delighted that this Alert system is back up and running and I'm looking forward to much greater co-operation with the Commissioner's officers."
Mr Dhindsa said that he was keen to invite other groups to explore whether they too could use the system. I want to build on the work by Neighbourhood Watch who have used it to provide community safety alerts and advice to thousands of members. "It's a fantastic communications tool," he said, "I want as many residents as possible to benefit from my decision to continue its funding."
