Police and Crime Commissioner launches £275,000 community-driven crime fighting fund

Published on Tuesday 27 September 2016

Derbyshire's Police and Crime Commissioner Hardyal Dhindsa has launched a new grant scheme empowering grassroots' organisations to take a proactive role in the safety of their communities.

The Commissioner has set aside £275,000 annually for his Community Action Grant to fund innovative crime prevention initiatives that support his Police and Crime Plan priorities at a local level, protect vulnerable people and help prevent crime and antisocial behaviour.

Grants of up to £25,000 are available to community groups, non-profit organisations and third sector bodies for projects which take a fresh approach to long-term problems and foster good partnership working between communities and criminal justice agencies.

Launching the new fund, the Commissioner said: "The most resilient and cohesive communities are those in which local people have accepted responsibility for the welfare of their neighbours and have taken an active role in managing community safety.

"It is my belief that projects conceived and delivered at a grassroots level can make a huge difference to public safety, boost feelings of safety and reassurance and improve the quality of life overall.

"To build safe and supportive communities, we need the knowledge and the experience of the very people who live and work there. When a community works together to set appropriate boundaries on acceptable behaviour, it fosters a culture of dignity and respect which has far-reaching effects.

"My grants scheme will enable community groups to achieve this by taking control of specific community problems and developing bespoke solutions that will improve life for everyone, both now and in the long-term."

In 2016-17, the Commissioner will share £275,000 among community safety organisations that support his Police and Crime Plan Priorities. These include keeping vulnerable people safe from harm, supporting victims, maintaining strong and effective partnership working, tackling drugs and alcohol, supporting those with mental health issues and working with young people to break the cycle of offending and repeat victimisation.

Large grants of between £2,501 and £25,000 will be available once a year while smaller grants of up to £2,500 will be allocated three times per year. All successful grants will run for a maximum 12-month period.

Applications for large grants close on 31 October 2016 and the Commissioner will make his final decision by 16 December 2016. Organisations interested in applying for a smaller grant have until 1 November 2016 to submit their application, with allocation decisions set to be made on 30 November 2016. Further small grants rounds will take place between 1 and 31 March 2017 and 1 and 31 July 2017.

Application forms, eligibility notes and guidance are available in the grants section of the Commissioner's website at: http://www.derbyshire-pcc.gov.uk/communityactiongrant
